Calico Jack

Calico Jack has been sailing Indonesian waters since her 2014 launch, hand-built on the beaches of Bira in South Sulawesi by Adam, who co-owns the boat and still captains her today. Over a decade on the same boat in the same waters shows — the operator's local knowledge of Raja Ampat is extensive, and it's where Calico Jack spends the bulk of her season, with additional itineraries into the Banda Sea and Cenderawasih Bay.

She's a 30-metre traditional phinisi carrying a maximum of 10 guests across five cabins, with a crew of 10 including a marine biologist cruise director who brings genuine expertise to briefings and shore talks rather than a generic script. Built for long-range operation — dual 220HP engines, onboard water production at 5,000 litres a day, and a water tank capacity to match — she's equipped to operate far from port for extended periods, reaching the more remote stretches of eastern Indonesia that shorter-range boats can't.

Diving that's taken seriously

Diving runs from two dedicated tenders with a purpose-built dive deck, nitrox system, and camera station, supported by low guide-to-diver ratios that keep groups small and well guided. The boat is set up as a proper expedition-style liveaboard first — everything from the dive deck layout to the camera preparation station and separate rinse tanks reflects a crew that dives often and knows what makes a day of diving run smoothly.

Beach setups and lifestyle, not just diving

What sets Calico Jack apart from a pure dive-focused liveaboard is the amount of attention given to time above the water. Kayaking through limestone lagoons, paddleboarding quiet bays, island walks, and visits to remote villages are a regular feature of every itinerary, not an occasional add-on. Signature beach barbecue evenings — a bonfire-lit dinner set up on a remote tropical beach — are one of the things guests mention most often. Cabins

Five cabins accommodate up to 10 guests: two convertible cabins that switch between double and twin configuration, two double cabins for couples, and one twin cabin suited to friends or solo travellers. Every cabin has air conditioning, an en-suite bathroom with hot shower, charging sockets, storage space, and daily housekeeping.

Anne Bonny — the private charter sister ship

Calico Jack's fleet also includes Anne Bonny, a newer 30-metre sister yacht built specifically for private charter — three cabins, a maximum of nine guests, and a fully tailored itinerary rather than a fixed schedule. She's not available on standard shared departures, but worth knowing about if you're planning a private group trip, honeymoon, or family charter rather than joining a scheduled cruise.
