Mutiara Laut

Mutiara Laut — "Pearl of the Sea" — is a classic two-masted schooner, hand-built in 2009 by Dutch captain Leo Van Oostenbrugge working alongside Indonesian craftsmen, and comprehensively refitted in 2023. Her design draws on 18th-century North Atlantic sailing tradition blended with the heritage of Sulawesi's phinisi ships. With seven sails and a genuine cruising speed of 9 knots under sail, she's a real sailing yacht rather than a motor vessel with decorative masts — a distinction that sets her apart from most of the fleet in Indonesian waters. She's been featured in Superyacht Times, Time Out, and the Bangkok Post, and has hosted guests ranging from Mitt Romney to Queen's Roger Taylor over the years.

She's operated by the same agency as Aliikai and Jakare, both also on Coralbound. Aliikai Voyage shares Mutiara Laut's diving-and-leisure philosophy closely, while Jakaré runs similar itineraries with a somewhat stronger diving focus. All three reflect the same underlying approach: diving is one part of the voyage, not the entire point of it.

Diving and leisure, properly balanced

Voyages typically include one to two dives a day, with the rest of the time given over to snorkelling, sea kayaking, wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, waterskiing, and beach excursions — plus plenty of unstructured time to read, relax on deck, or simply enjoy being at sea. Full scuba equipment, nitrox, and snorkelling gear are included in the rate, alongside port fees, marine park fees, and any applicable surcharges. A crew of 16 to 18, including onboard PADI divemasters, runs each voyage.

Dining is a genuine feature of the trip rather than an afterthought — plated meals prepared by chefs with Michelin-trained backgrounds, served both on deck and in the indoor dining area, alongside wellness touches like sunrise yoga and onboard spa treatments.

Cabins

Seven cabins across two decks accommodate up to 15 guests. The Master Cabin sits at the aft of the main deck with a king-size bed, en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, and a private terrace. Four Double Cabins on the lower deck each have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, and a sofa that converts into a single bed. Two Front Cabins on the lower deck offer double beds with en-suite facilities. All king and double beds can be configured as twins on request, and interiors are finished throughout in warm teak.

Where Mutiara Laut sails

Itineraries cover Raja Ampat from November to April, Komodo from March to October, the Banda Sea and Spice Islands from April to October, and Sumbawa from June to September, generally running 7 to 12-night voyages. Tailor-made routes are available on request for private charter.
